10 Smart Travel Tips for Stress-Free Adventures
Early October signals the beginning of Fall Break season! 🍁 Heading out for Fall Break or planning your next big bucket list trip? These smart strategies can help you travel smoother, safer, and with fewer headaches. Over the years I’ve picked up these tips the easy way — and a few the hard way.
As I start to pack for my own Fall Break adventure, I’m leaving you with my 10 Stress-Free Adventures checklist — a list I find helpful whether you’re crossing state lines or country boundaries.

For Your Trip Right Now ✈️
1. Pack Smart, Pack Light
Every “just in case” item feels heavier after 100 stairs. Stick to versatile basics and layers, especially in fall when mornings and evenings are cool but afternoons are warm. And don’t forget that rain jacket!
2. Check Seat Maps Before You Fly
Don’t assume your assigned seat is the best one. Tools like AeroLOPA and SeatMaps give you detailed layouts of the aircraft so you can avoid being stuck in a less-than-ideal spot. Flown that A320 before? Sure! But different airlines can have slightly different seat configurations.
3. Be Strategic With Credit Cards
Avoid foreign transaction fees, know which cards give you lounge access, and check if your card requires a PIN abroad. I first ran into this in Iceland, where gas stations required a PIN to use my credit card. Thankfully, I had a backup debit card with me. Now I always carry two PIN-enabled cards just in case one doesn’t work.
4. Leverage Loyalty Programs
Even if you don’t fly often, it’s worth signing up! Points add up faster than you think, and perks like free checked bags or priority boarding can make a big difference. Even if you don’t believe you are going to stay at a certain hotel brand again, do it! Hotel mergers and acquisitions of smaller regional chains happen. The Marriott acquisition of Starwood in 2016 proved to be very fruitful for many of us!
5. Consider Travel Insurance
This has already paid off for me — like when delays from Paris to Naples caused me to miss a tour, or when my ship couldn’t dock in Bruges this summer. My policy reimbursed me for the costs. If you travel multiple times a year, consider an annual policy — it often saves money in the long run.
6. Keep Digital & Physical Copies of Documents
Take photos of your passport, ID, and reservations, and email them to yourself so you can still access them if your phone gets lost or stolen.
7. Plan Your First 24 Hours
You don’t need to map out your entire trip, but have a plan for your arrival — especially after an overnight flight. This is one area where it’s worth splurging. Sometimes paying for a driver or airport transfer is far less stressful than trying to navigate a metro or bus system when you’re jet-lagged.
8. Stay Hydrated & Snack-Ready
Flights, long drives, and hikes are easier when you have a refillable water bottle and some snacks handy. Liquid IV will be traveling with me next week, as I want to stay hydrated while exploring Zion Canyon.
9. Respect the Place You’re Visiting
Whether it’s Mont Saint-Michel or a U.S. national park, follow local rules, leave no trace, and be mindful of the people and spaces around you.
10. Stay Flexible
Weather changes, delays happen, trails close — sometimes the unexpected detour ends up being the highlight. I like to leave an unplanned day in the itinerary so that weather or travel delays don’t throw off the entire trip.
For Future Trip Planning 🗺️
If your flights are already booked for Fall Break, keep these tips in your back pocket for your next trip:
- Use Google Flights Like a Pro – The map and flexible date tools can reveal surprising deals. My favorite thing to do is enter my home airport and dates, and see what destinations have “too good to pass up” fares.
- Set Flight Alerts – Price trackers will let you know when it’s the best time to buy. I keep these with both Google Flights and Hopper. Both of these are free of charge and can save you money!
- Don’t Book the Cheapest Fare Class – That rock-bottom ticket may cost more later with bag and seat fees.

Final Thoughts
Travel is always a balance between preparation and flexibility. A few smart steps before and during your trip can save you money, reduce stress, and leave more room for the fun parts — like hiking in Zion, wandering Mont Saint-Michel, or eating mussels in Beauvoir. ✨
