Ten Things I Don’t Travel Without

Over time, and through trial and error, I’ve figured out which travel essentials I never leave home without. Every trip has taught me something — and little by little, I’ve built my own list of must-haves. These aren’t just things I toss into my bag; they’re my travel lifesavers, the items that keep me comfortable, safe, and sane no matter where the journey takes me.

So, here are my top 10 travel essentials — the things I never board a plane without, and why they’ve earned a permanent spot in my bag.

1. Anti-Theft Day Bag

What it is: A lightweight crossbody bag with hidden zippers and slash-proof straps.
Why I love it: I can wander crowded markets or train stations without worrying about pickpockets. It’s also a safeguard against someone trying to slash the strap and run off with your bag. Peace of mind = priceless.

2. Portable Battery Pack

What it is: A slim charger that slips easily into my bag.
Why I love it: Between photos, maps, and restaurant reviews, my phone is my lifeline on trips. This keeps me powered all day and no longer have to “budget” the charge on my phone and hold back from taking pictures or videos.

3. Refillable Water Bottle

What it is: A reusable, lightweight bottle.
Why I love it: I stay hydrated, save money, and cut down on plastic waste — a win all around. In many cities, like Rome, it is perfectly safe to fill your bottle at one of the many public fountains.

4. AllBirds Shoes

What it is: Lightweight, breathable sneakers.
Why I love it: They’re comfy for walking miles (or climbing Amalfi’s stairs), stylish enough for cafes, check the box for the “dresses and sneakers” trend, and easy to pack. I am a huge fan of the Tree Dashers linked here.

5. Packable Rain Jacket (REI)

What it is: A waterproof, foldable jacket that squishes into my day bag.
Why I love it: Weather is unpredictable — especially on coastal trips. This jacket has saved me more than once. It proved to be invaluable during our Geiranger hike just this summer! And who wants to navigate a tight sidewalk in Paris carrying an umbrella?

6. Travel Scarf or Wrap

What it is: A soft, versatile wrap.
Why I love it: It doubles as a blanket on chilly flights, a cover-up in cathedrals, or a layer for cool evenings. This one by Dreamsoft is my favorite and I now own a couple of them. Also easy to stash in your bag for the unplanned cathedral visits! I failed to plan in Barcelona and ended up coming back the next day, handy scarf on hand!

7. Daypack

What it is: A step up from the crossbody for times when I know I’ll do some shopping.
Why I love it: This 22L day pack from REI is the perfect size to carry the day’s essentials, snacks from the grocery store, or a baguette in Paris! It’s also ideal to store small purchases without having to take yet another bag.

8. Packing Cubes

What it is: Zippered organizers for clothes and gear.
Why I love it: They keep my suitcase tidy, help me find things quickly, and make repacking on the go a breeze. I have managed two weeks in Europe on a carry-on thanks to these cubes. This set by Veken includes a laundry bag and a shoe bag; both are nice bonuses!

9. Mini First Aid Kit

What it is: A small pouch with band-aids, blister pads, and basic meds.
Why I love it: Blisters and headaches don’t care that you’re on vacation. A little prep keeps small things from ruining big adventures.

10. Apple Tag

What it is: Like Life360, but for your luggage.
Why I love it: Even the best laid plans can go sideways and you could be forced to check your bag, especially on intra-Europe flights. An air tag can be of tremendous help in getting you reunited with your luggage. And after misplacing the air tags themselves a couple of times, I got the silicone air tag holders and now hook them to keep the tags from running off!
